Yesterday was finally the KL Marathon day – it was quite a chronical journey starting from months back & distilling into hours and minutes…
Ever since I picked up running last Dec, I’ve been lovin’ running in my own ways. So when a buddy told me to join the Standard Chartered KL Marathon, I was tempted but also doubtful that I could actually do it. Anyhow, after a couple months of deliberation & improving run times, I signed up for it in April.
Then disaster struck – on one fateful May evening, I sprained my right ankle & was subsequently under house arrest. Of course, the immediate prognosis from both western & eastern medicine was not to run at all & let time work its magic. I was even told at a point that I should quit running for good, which was quite devastating to me if not for my denial to the situation. So the girl in denial went on to let time do its job & resumed yoga to keep active.
Along the way, receiving all the twits & emails on race pack collection etc, it was worrisome that I’m gonna just wing it for my debut running event. Then to welcome it all, I (and not just me) had an absolutely horrendous experience in race pack collection (think, standing in squishy field for 2 hours in the hot sun, in heels & corporate wear in an unmoving queue – well done organizers!)
I really wasn’t having too much faith in it being an awesome event.
So, exactly 6 weeks after the accident, it was Marathon day. A day full of irony, might I add.
Because after the seemingly unending heat spell KL has been under, it rained at 4am of race day morning. Actually, more like poured cats & dogs. I’m sure the organizers neglected this tiny bit of detail called ‘meteo’.
We arrived at 5am. Our flag off was 7am. Everyone caught some winks for an hour & we were off!
Along the way, I bumped into Anna-Rina (rock on babe!), Jan (who’s at 50 & going strong…) and in the final km, Bryan which cheered me on. Cheers mate! I managed 8km without stopping/walking… worried that the ankle will act up but it remained cool (thank yoga & my awesome tabib/doc)
Playlist of the day:
– Starting track: Better off alone by Alice Deejay
– 6km: The Everlasting Gaze by Smashing Pumpkins (kick ass track!)
– 8km: Numb by Linkin Park (LOL)
– 9km: Bruises by Chairlift (how apt)
– Final km: Gotta be Somebody by Nickelback (ROCK ONNNNN!)
To recuperate, we decided that the only appropriate fuel is none other than…
Banana leaf rice at Kanna Curry House!!! Twice in 3 days… absolutely worth it though :D
CC also showed that you can be kiasu… here he is with his drink of choice – we all just cracked up at his antics!
- CC drinking his 200-Pluses (geddit?)
All in all, it was a great experience & certainly proved that when you put your mind to it, your body will just follow suit. Most of all, I had tons of fun with my mates & can’t wait to clock more miles!
